Random Thoughts – Weather

As I sit here in my living room, waiting on the rain and storms to move in, I started wondering about the weather in different places. Since I haven’t traveled outside of North America, I have only experienced Summers in the United States.

Living in the South, we have some very bipolar weather. Winters can vary from the 20’s to the 80’s all in the same day. We can get all four seasons in the same day when it’s November or December. If you are moving to Texas, don’t think that we will have a standard Winter. On no, it usually only lasts a few days at a time and we get ice storms. Snow falls are few and far between. Winter is usually our rainy season. Summer in the South is miserable. The further South you go, the more miserable it is. The humidity can be unbearable. So much so, when you step outside, it feels like your skin is melting off of you. July and August are the worst. With it just now being June, and the heat index already being at or above 100 degrees, we know that July and August will be pretty close to temperatures found in the Seventh Layer of Hell. We often pray for rain, just to cut out the humidity. You would think that it would cool off the temps, but not in the South. Oh no, have you ever felt the rain when the air temperature is 100 degrees? It’s like boiling water hitting your skin. We are lucky if the rain cools temps down into the mid-90’s. I follow people from different countries who say that our temperatures are crazy. This is strange to me because there are many countries whose temperatures get hotter than ours in the South.

How do people from other countries handle the weather in the Southern United States? I know that the temperatures here in the US will vary depending on the region. However, there are times when normally cold places – like Alaska – can get as hot as Texas. Sometimes, the temps in Alaska are hotter than the temperatures in Texas. Do they even have air conditioners in Alaska? How about other countries? Some countries – like the UK – do not have air conditioners like we have in the US, so how do they stay cold in the Summer? I know people say that the UK doesn’t get that hot and the hottest is normally around 85 or 90 degrees Fahrenheit. That is hot. What do they do to keep cool in Summer?

How do people from Australia handle the heat? Do they have air conditioning like we do in the US? Their country is mostly desert, so it has to get squelching in Australia. They have to have a better way to stay cool in their Summer than we do.

In the movies, you see countries like India where they have no air conditioning and they have their windows open and that is all the air flow that they have. Is that still what they do? I can remember growing up in Louisiana in the Summer and we had our windows and doors open. The heat did not really bother us kids, since we were outside all of the time. I do remember the water coming out of the water hoses being very warm. We would be sure to not touch our lips to the metal end of the hose. If we did, we were sure to burn our lips off. Ahh, childhood in the 1980’s. That in itself is a different discussion for a different day.

Anyway… back to the weather. How do other countries handle their heated summers? Are there Summers comparable to the Summer of the Southern United States?

Let’s discuss. 🙂

Have a wonderful evening and stay safe out there. There’s a bunch of crazies. Since I am staying home, there’s one less out there on the roads.
